Currently we are carrying three bags, 1 small one for 2 bottles 2 jars of food, bowls and spoons. 1 large for clothes 2-3 outfits and 2-3 onesies, 4 bibs/burp cloths, 8 disposies (JIC, MIL's request), wipes, baby care kit and 4 pocket dipes, and another large one for toys and 4 more pocket dipes plus a large wet bag.
DH and I carry this plus DD in her snowsuit with a blanket and Tiger (small stuffed animal but still another thing to hang onto) into MIL's 4X a week.

DH wants to use a small suitcase on wheels, ack!

I do not want to leave anything overnight there because FIL smokes and everything of DD's smells terribly of smoke if we leave it there.

Any suggestions?

Wow, that sounds like quite a lot to haul. I'd suggest searching for a way to leave things there yet protected from the smoke smell. For example, if each outfit and the diapers were sealed in a ziplock or 2, would the smell still get to it? How about in a plastic Rubbermaid-type bin with a tight fitting lid? I think that there are special bags for campers and hikers so their gear stays totally dry in a downpour--would something like that be smell proof? If not, I suspect that an enormous bag is the only thing left. Land's End's Do It All and Large Tailored Tote are pretty big and might save you from a suitcase!

I just got the lands end backpack diaper bag that is on their overstock page and it is huge. I bet you could get almost all of that stuff in there and maybe just an extra small bag for some toys. If it were me I would buy MIL her own set of bowls and spoons and leave them at her house - things like that shouldn't be affected by the smoke. And I would also buy her a package of disposable diapers and leave them sealed up so I wouldn't have to haul them back and forth. If you leave the disposable diapers and bowls at her house I bet for sure you could get all the rest of that stuff into the lands end back pack.
