Not sure where to post this, usually I hang out in the stroller forum! This is kinda last-minute... We are leaving Friday for Europe with our one-year-old, and I was wondering how you all like to pack for a 1-2 week trip with a toddler (or even two)? We need a new suitcase and are debating between a 29" model (basically a large rolling upright with a garment bag inside) - which runs the risk of being overweight if packed full - and a 24" or 26" model.

For this particular trip we are leaning towards taking the 29" bag and one or two rollaboards (22"), but I am wondering if in general it would make sense to buy two 29" bags - one for DH, one for me. The thought is that the larger size would come in handy for car trips (to the beach, visiting friends/family in other cities) when the airline weight limit isn't a consideration. Right now we only have DD, but the idea was that the two big bags would be good for later if/when we have another child. Or is this overkill?

thanks for your thoughts!

I just purchased an expandable 26" suitcase through ebags for me and my son to use for our trips. This one actually expands 3". The 29" was just a little too big, plus I was afarid with all that room that I might overpack and cause the bag to be too heavy. My husband's a light packer, so he's fine with a luggage that's 24".

You could mix the sizes that way you'll have one of each, so you'll have a smaller bag for the shorter trips. You can always bring and extra bag if you have more stuff when you're driving.

Thanks!! I think we may return one of the 29-inchers and get a 26" one instead. We are not light travelers, so it's probably best to put some kind of limit around our packing. :0)

I generally find that it's easier for our family to manage two lighter, smaller suitcases than one large, heavy one, especially if the big one gets overpacked and ends up costing you the weight surcharge.

As for packing for longer trips with a child, I've also always tried hard to find a place to do laundry towards the middle of the trip. And roll up every article of clothing that can take it - saves TONS of space that way.

thanks for the packing tips! However, now I'm waffling and leaning towards keeping both the large suitcases. The idea is that we'll pack a small duffle bag in the bigger one and use it for purchases, overflow etc. on the way back. Guess we're hopeless overpackers. :0)
