What you choose probably depends on how old your child is. My DS and DD are 19 months and 3 y.o,respectively, but they like the same toys. I have a small cosmetics bag that I take in my bag. In it, I carry 4 pretend wooden lollipops, one pretend popsicle, a Maisy wooden necklace, 2 small penny racer cars, and a little wooden bird. They are small, I can keep track of them, and there is enough variety to keep them happy. I'll rotate them every few weeks or so, but usually, since they don't play with these toys unless we are on the road, they are happy with what's in there.

We keep board books in the car as well and rotate those too.

My son is crazy about Thomas so before we leave the house, I ask him to choose a few engines and put them in the diaper bag. I also keep some crayons, as well as some books, a travel-sized Magna Doodle and extra little cars in the car that I can grab if necessary.

Since our DS's are about the same age I'll tell you right now these are the hits:
Books (he loves the Baby ones by Piddy books)
stacking cups (I give him two and he loves to bang them)
Sensory Balls- these are made by the same as Peek-A-Blocks but they are balls the set of 6 cost $6 and he loves them.
Spoons

He seems to do really well with those. I rotate the books and sometimes I bring a truck w/if we'll be gone a long time.

I second the travel-size magna doodle. My 2 y/o DS loves it. Also a couple board books, maybe a couple small cars or trucks.

I bought a mini Doodle Pro, I couldn't find a small Magna Doodle. It's a hit so far!

I also have a mini Doodle Pro in my bag right now along with a tiny package of markers, a tiny notepad, and a thin Elmo book (slides perfectly in the back pocket of my Fleurville ST!) I rotate toys all the time too since Conner gets bored after about 2 minutes and he often ends up playing with my car keys when I've run out of toys and snacks!
