Our daughter was diagnosed with a metabolic disorder (MCAD) through her newborn screen. It is very manageable, but only if it is diagnosed. Children usually don't show symptoms until its too late. If your state does not offer testing, look into paying for it yourself, I think it is pretty inexpensive. (less than $50) We were very frightened at first since neither of our families has a history of this disorder. Most of these disorders are very rare and little is know about them--another reason to be diagnosed early!
