DS looks like he is ready to pull his little ears off his head and his legs are scaly. He has improved over the last week since we've been using Cetaphil soap and cream, but his ears just don't seem to be getting better. Any advice?

how about aquaphor? It worked when Robert's skin was so dry. And I didn't use anything at all (soap wise) on his face, just water.

it could be cradle cap, even though it's not necessarily on his scalp. My DS had really dry skin on his ears and forehead from cradle cap, and on his legs and arms (cradle cap as well). make sure you get ALL the soap off when washing. use a baby scrub brush. keep using the cetaphil. the aquaphor is a bit greasy for my son, and it didn't really stop it much. you can put olive oil on the areas he has it and cover them up (socks, hat, clothes) for an hour, then wash off with soap. or if it's really bad use selsun blue after the olive oil. i'll do a touch up of it every other wash because my DS is really prone to it. the cetaphil has really worked for us on his forehead. I don't know if any of that'll help, I really hope it will for you!!

Make sure you aren't doing too many baths and keep the water on the cooler side. Try doing baths every 2-3 days instead of daily or every other day- it really helps and they just don't need more than that. Wipe them off as necessary (creases, diaper area...) but limit the full on bath. It helps my ds a ton in the winter months.
Eucerin is a good lotion.

I was going suggest Eucerin also
My DS2 has super dry skin especially in the fall and winter. He called it allagtor skin when he was a toddler.
We did baths ever 2 or 3 days in the winter and I only used soap on his head and bum.

I dont know if it helped but I also ran ( and still do) a humidifier in his room at night.
