I need to discontinue breastfeeding. How much pumping should I do so I'm emptying my breasts while not stimulating it too much to keep producing milk?
Thanks,
Liza

I may be wrong, but what I understood was that breastmilk works on a supply/demand schedule. I was told to not even pump a little because that creates a demand. I was told to use cabbage leaves in my bra, bind myself tightly with an ace bandage, and use ice packs. I didn't do the cabbage leaves, but the other two helped aleviate the pain.
If I am wrong, I hope someone will correct me. You could probably call your ped or obgyn and ask them.

When I stopped breastfeeding I eliminated one nursing session (pumping session) about every 3 days. It will take a couple of weeks to totally wean but the discomfort wasn't too bad and it was a nice gradual transition for my DD. The first one in the morning and last one in the evening were the last sessions to go.
Good Luck!
