Hi all,

We swaddle our 3 mo. old every night, and as summer approaches I'm wondering what people do in the hot months. I'm sure he's going to get hot all wrapped up. Is it time to stop swaddling him anyway? When do people normally stop? It seems like he'll just bonk himself awake with his little hands if we stop.

Thanks!

We stopped swaddling around 2 months. It didn't seem to make too much difference in how our son slept and he was so active that he got frustrated if he couldn't get out of the swaddle when he wanted to. Funny thing, he started sleeping through the night at about the same time, but that only lasted for about a month. At three months, he started waking again once during the night to eat. At five months, he has just started to sleep through the night again.

I would try not swaddling (I am always worried about overheating) and see how he does. Some kids need the swaddling longer to sleep better, some don't.

Try it out and then my best advice (I'm a first time mother so take this for whatever it is worth) is that Mom usually knows best, so follow your instincts.

Good luck.

We swaddled the first 2 months, then she started falling asleep on her own. At the same time, we found out DD was allergic to dairy in my diet. She started sleeping a lot better when we cut out the dairy. I suppose her stomach wasn't bothering her anymore so she could sleep.

My parents are originally from the Philippines and they gave me a bunch of thin cotton sheets. They're extremely lightweight and about 2.5 feet square on both sides, so it's just right for swaddling a small baby. I'm sure you could find some cotton diapers or something that would also help swaddle without being too warm.

we live in texas and our daughter was swaddled in a loose rib knot blanket all through the summer. She couldn't sleep without being swaddled until she was close to 9 months old... so if your baby likes it, then just buy a lightweight blanket and use that.

We stopped swaddling DD when she was about 4.5 months old (partway into sleep training). She just basically decided she didn't want to be swaddled anymore and while she initially had more difficulty sleeping long periods without it, it only took her a couple days to adjust. That said, we did swaddle her with the (lightweight) miracle blanket well into summer. We just put her in her diaper and swaddled her without extra clothing and it was just fine. She didn't overheat and her bedroom was a warm 78-79 degrees.
