Nap Troubles - 12 month old

My son is 12.5 months old and has never been a good napper. I feel like I've tried everything. I really caved in and have rocked him for his naps. It generally took me 30 minutes rocking for a 30 minute nap. I decided to live with this, but now he won't stay asleep when I lie him down in the crib. I tried to let him cry himself to sleep, but he just sits up in the crib and cries a sad cry until I come get him. He is just fine for bedtime and sleeps 11-12 hours each night with no troubles. It's just the naps! Does anyone have any tips for getting him to nap on his own?

Has anyone else tried putting him down for a nap?

Maybe because you're the mom and you eventually go get him, he's gotten used to you rocking him? maybe someone else should intervene for a few days and see how that works?

Is that possible? Maybe dad or a friend over a weekend? You just go for a walk at nap time??
