I don't have any access to my Baby 411 book, my AAP book, or any other resources. DS has been fussy today, but we were making a long car trip to visit my parents, so I thought he was tired of his carseat. He started coughing (he's had a cough for the past few days) and then threw up. It was chunky and smelled aweful, not like his usual spit-up. He's not thrown up since, though, so I don't know if that is part of this or not.

By the time we arrived, he had a fever. I had to run to the store to buy a thermometer. His temp is 100.5. Do I give him milk, Pedialyte, juice, food? I don't know what to do at all, but the three hour trip home doesn't seem like a good option, either.

Oh, I am so sorry your trip has started so bad! There is definately a bug going around right now. If he has only thrown up the 1 time, it is probably OK to feed him normally, but he probably won't be very hungry and that is OK.

If his tummy seems to be bothering him, pedialyte might be a good option. It is a little easier than milk. For the fever, you can give him tylenol or motrin at this age (he's 1, right?). Tylenol can be given every 4 hours and motrin every 6. Just keep the fluids up and keep giving the tylenol/motrin. That should help with the fever.

Finally, if he vomits again, wait 1 hour before feeding him anything and then start pedialyte 1 teaspoon every 15 min for the next hour or 2. If he vomits, repeat the process (wait 1 hour, start pedialyte 1 tsp...)

That's my best advice :) Hang in there!! Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!!

Ditto the above.

No dairy until vomit & diarheah free for 24hrs. Try the BRAT diet -- bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Even with mild vomitting, we eliminate dairy for 24hrs.

FWIW, if the fever d/n go higher, I'd probably not give tylenol and definitely not motrin (hard on the stomach). THat's a personal call, based on previous advice from my dr re DD. Its a judgement call, but I'd try tylenol before motrin if his tummy's upset.

Good luck!

I swear I read in some parenting mag or Newsweek this year that they no longer think you should avoid dairy for 24 hours. I think what they were saying is to eat what you feel like eating and you probably will be fine.

Hmmm...maybe it is just for diarrhea not vomitting (I always tend to lump all stomach ailments together). But, this discusses what I read and links to the AAP's thoughts on diet during/ after illness:

OP- I hope your little one feels better. the fever is low and the throwing up could be a one off. Hopefully it is! And hopefully you all get a good night's sleep. :)

The vomiting might well be related to the cough not a tummy bug. Kids often throw up extra mucus (mixed with milk) thus the chunks. I agree with the tylenol/motrin advice and to go ahead and try feeding him once more and then try pedialyte.

ETA, you can always call your doctor even if you're not home. I have an extra pamphlet for our pedi in our trip car JIC something happens while we're away and I need to call them.

Hugs Rachel, and Congrats. ;)

I hope your DS is feeling better. Mine threw up twice the night before last, very scary and sad. :( He bounced right back though, hopefully your DS will too.

AskDrSears.com is a great resource for information regarding kids and health. I hope Seth is feeling better soon. It's never fun when they are sick.

Hmmm, that's interesting.

Children's Hospital here is still telling parents no dairy for diarrhea and our dr says for vomitting too. I found out the hard way with DD that if we re-introduce dairy too soon, we are right back to square one. So, for us, we just skip dairy (haaaard to do, she loves her milk!) if she vomits or has diarrhea. FWIW, DD has been tested by an allergist and is not allergic to dairy.

The no dairy thing seems to be a bigger help for DD than the BRAT diet, which is hard for us -- she's not a great eater at the best of times and of those 4 foods, only toast interests her.
