I am thinking of making picture frames for Christmas gifts this year. I was going to try to make them from salt dough (perhaps rolling out the dough, then using a cookie cutter to cut out a spot for the picture--? haven't quite decided yet) and have my kids decorate them by adding handprints or something...then let them dry until they are hard and have the kids go crazy with paint. When we give them as gifts, I will put a picture of the kids in the frame. Has anyone tried this? Any advice or tips? Am I nuts? This should work, right?

I remember making salt dough frames back in girl scouts. ;) There was a discussion last Christmas about using salt dough for these types of things (here's a link: http://tinyurl.com/5wfpj) As I mentioned in that thread (see the final post), if you're not worried about them lasting for eternity, salt dough will work great. But, if you want them to last for generations, salt dough may not hold up...

Thanks, Jennifer! I'll have to experiment and post results.
