My mother-in-law is going to make my son a Snoedel-like lovey. We are looking for advice on how to make it since neither of us has ever seen a Snoedel in person. What is the pom-pom head made out of (is it soft or sort of hard?)? Any experience or advice?

Well, looking at the website, it sounds like the head is a wool ball, probably not too hard. They probably got carded wool and felted it into a ball. I'd see if I could find a felted wool ball at a children's store, one of those more upscale natural type places. Once you have the ball I think the rest would be easy. I'd sew two square pieces of flannel together like you were making a pillow. place the ball in the center, fold the fabric to make a triangle. Secure the ball in place, and then tie knots on the tips of "hands".

Of course with all the love that went into making it, DS will probably fall for a cloth diaper or something. I tried so hard to get DD to fall for a lovey (that self-soothing stuff) to no avail. No lovey, no pacifer, no thumb, just me.

Good Luck, I'm sure it will turn out darling.

I just saw a pattern for these somewhere. I think that they stuffed the head with polyester fiberfill or wool, but you could use anything that makes sense to you.

ETA: Here's the link. I found it in one of the threads that Kath posted below.
