I'm looking for recommendations on tools and books to get started with. I've never done it before (though DH has), but we want to make some things for our son. I'm tired of searching for exactly what I want when I could have the pleasure of making it myself!

Hi --

What kind of projects do you have in mind? What kind of tools do you have already, if any? How helpful is DH? Is he the type that would be good at teaching you how to use power tools, or would you be better off taking a class? hehe...I know that my DH, he would be fine teaching the basics...but for fine woodworking skills, I would be better off taking a class.

Check with your local continuing education/adult education program or the local community college -- you should be able to find a beginners class.

I just started subscribing to this magazine... I've only recieved one issue so far, but I like it. I did this free trial issue thing first. https://ssl.drgnetwork.com/ecom/aal/cgi/subscribe/order?org=AAL&publ=WW&key=WWGG

This is a fairly new forum for women in woodworking -- doesn't seem to have a lot of traffic yet, but it does get daily traffic http://www.womeninwoodworking.com/dcforum/dcboard.pl?az=list&forum=DCForumID1&conf=DCConfID1

I'd ask on there for book reccommendations. I don't have any good reccomendations for you right now, sorry. Most of our stuff is in storage waiting for the builder to finish our house, so I don't have access to our books.

DD is waking up....I'll finish this later :)

Act 2; one day later, baby asleep again :)

DH and I used to do quite a bit of woodworking. Its been awhile since I've done a lot of hands-on. I didn't want to be working with woods and finishes while pregnant or breastfeeding. These days I tend to be the one designing the projects (and giving the orders LOL). I have a whole stash of ideas that I've saved from various places -- catalogs, magazines, etc... Some of the things we've done: DD's crib (made out of Purple Heart), a loft bed for a friend of mine, shoe racks, CD holders.

If you can give me an idea of what you want to make, I can give you an idea of what it would require.

HTH somewhat!
