My uncle made the cutest unfinished blocks for DS and I want to paint them like the HABA Fantasy Blocks (see pic). However, I'm not sure what kind of paint to use and I don't trust the opinions of the people at Michael's or Joanne's. Can anyone recommend a good non-toxic paint? I don't want to spend a fortune on paint, though! Thanks!

If you've got one near you, try checking out Ikea. As I recall they have a fair amount of information regarding their paints, stains, and finishes, and some of it is marked as non-toxic/child-safe. I would think any acrylic or water-based paint would be ok when it dries.

My dad has made E a bunch of wooden toys, some painted, some just finished. His research on the finishes indicated that basic polyurethane was only toxic when in liquid form, and would probably be ok if ingested in small quantities. He too had a hard time finding stuff out when he was looking a couple of years ago, though. I do try to prevent E from chewing on his blocks just in case.
