At night Tristan has been waking to many episodes of a "whine", they are not tear producing cries but the sound of true discomfort in my opinion. There are frequent, he is teething his 8th and 9th tooth.

The goodnews is these whines don't last long, I always offer him a bottle and he takes it, but we are really having to comfort him now to go back to sleep which usually falls into the 5-7 minute range. The bads news is these are real often...I'd say after 2:00am they are almost every 60-90 minutes!!!!

Steve is going crazy with it saying "I need to sleep", I am getting mad at Steve because I know we have it good in that I have only paced the halls once with Tristan to get him back to sleep, and I know that that is good. I also tell Steve that even a 7 year old will keep us awake more than this due to fears etc... (I thught Engine Joe from Tom Sawyer lived under my bed for a good 18 months when I was 7)...so I am getting mad at Steve for reacting this way, yet he equally responds if not more (since I can not fall back to sleep easily) so I really have no right.

We have never left him to cry (I'm not against it we jsut haven't needed to), he does sleep with us...
I am wondering if it is the switch to milk that was completed 2 weeks ago, we did it casually, poops are good and "clock work" for him...But his whines seem to me to be a discomfort and my gut feeling is it is in the belly region.

I think it is necessary for babies to get good sleep and that is my biggest concern...
Do I try soy????
Is this teething????

Neve, does Tristan get a red bum when he poops? Have his poops been super-soft? If so, it could be lactose intolerance and he might need Lactaid milk. But otherwise, I'd try Motrin first and see if that helps him get through the night - it could also easily be the teeth since there are no other visible signs!

Lori,
Thank you for responding, you are such an asset to these boards I swear!!!!
No no red bum, and his poops actually go from soft, to hard so no consistency that either...
Maybe it really is just the teeth. We do Motrin him and that really does not seem to help him...
I don't know...maybe it is hunger, but lord knows we feed this child!!!

Neve, here's a link that helped me tons when we were having problems with milk (Colin is lactose intolerant); there is a section on milk allergies, too:

I also think that babies continue to go through growth spurts past 6 months, so maybe it is that! Is he eating less during the day, perhaps, and making up for it at night?

If you still aren't sure, try going back to formula for a week or so and see if it helps!

Boy, Steve thinks the sleep thing is bad now - wait till the kid-count triples or quadruples!

It really could be the teeth! Some of the teeth are mich worse than others, especially the molars and the eye teeth.

He could also be going through a growth spurt and just be hungrier.

And he could just be becoming more of a toddler and starting to flex his "muscles" a bit.

Unfortunately, there's no real way to know which it is until the teeth come through or the spurt is over. And if nothing helps, then its probably being a toddler.

Isn't the truth...I think Steve is crazy to think this is bad!!!!
I mean I'd love a full 8 hours interupted, but I don't think Steve knows how good he has it!!!!

I'll read that, and just might try the formula again and see what happens...I do think he is hitting a growth spurt, he has gotten taller of a sudden!!!!

Neve- Are you giving Tristan formula with DHA/ARA? Lots of babies are having more "gas" problems with those. I'm including the like to Baby Center's formula feeding bb. There have been lots of discussions about it. My pediatrition is no longer recommending that her patients use them. We switched from Enfamil Lipil to Enfamil with Iron and all of a sudden had a happy baby again.

I don't know if this is your issue of not but, if it is I hope this helps.

Thank you thank you thank you for writing this...
For Tristan totally changed once we atarted him on ARA/DHA...I am hesistant to say that for I don't want to influence anyone, but my gut feeling has been along that it was that. We went from sleeping thru the night, with maybe a get up to several wake ups a night...
I really have felt this all along...

But in our new case, we have been on milk 100% for a good 10 days now, so no formula at all, and he wakes up in more of a "cry/whine" now...

But I am so glad that you wrote this for I am 100% certain that we had some issues with the ARA/DHA...they weren't real bad issues...but there was a definite difference in his sleep pattern immediatly...
