Is baby ready for cereal if she moves her tongue in & out

When I attempt to feed Sydney she does move her tongue in & out but it doesn't seem like she is swallowing anything ( she's 5 1/2 months ) it seems most of it ends up all over her face & on her bib, if I do manage to get the spoon further back in her mouth as the cereal goes down her throat she starts to gag, does this mean she isn't developmentally ready yet ? I tried to feed her at 4 months but stopped because then she DEFINTELY wan't ready, I thought now that she is moving her tongue she was ready, dont know if I should continue or wait again.

We have her 6 month check -up May 4, always excited about finding out her weight !!!!!!!!

That's called the tongue-thrust reflex, and as long as she has it, she really isn't ready for solids. I would put them away and try again in a few weeks.
