View Full Version : Are cooked berries OK under 2?

I bought blueberry muffin tops yesterday to have for breakfast this week.

I know that babes aren't supposed to have berries till they're 2. Does that also include cooked berries?

Thanks!

I'm sure there are many opinions, but my ped's handbook says to wait on berries only until age 1. James has been eating strawberries and blueberries for a long time with no problems (other than the fact that a big bowl of blueberries makes for some nasty-looking poop!).

Uh oh! Colin lived on berries last summer! (This summer too, but he's officially two now so I guess that's OK!) Is this an allergy thing or is there another reason?

I didn't think that berries were a problem under 2 either. I've been giving Alex blueberries and strawberries for awhile now.

I think strawberries are the allergy concern. I've seen blueberries on conservative lists starting around 8-10 mos and other berries at a year.

Mmmm...blueberry muffins... :)

I think the prohibition against blueberries is for *whole* blueberries, since they are a choking hazard. Cut up or cooked blueberries are not an issue.

Strawberries is after one year, due to possible allergies. (later if there is a family history of allergies)

I've heard that strawberries are an allergy concern but hadn't heard that for other berries. DD eats Earth's Best Pear and Rasberries and Apples and Blueberries flavors all the time with no problems.

Oh dear, that is what I thought. We've been giving DS the Earth's Best blueberry/bananna food.

What???? Where did you get that info (I don't mean that in a rude way, I'm just curious)!

Audrey's been eating blueberries since around 9 mos and strawberries since she was a year old. She eats both almost every day!!!

Another one here who has been giving fresh berries of all kinds since about 12 months.

It basically says that they are ok prior to 1 year:

Gosh, I hope berries are okay! Logan has been having berries raw, cooked, and jellied for quite a while. I never even considered they weren't okay, and got a little freaked when I saw this post. Oh well, if anything was to happen it would have happened already anyway, right?

I kid you not Kayla sat down to a half-pint of blueberries last week...ate the whole thing...and ate 'em whole (but she loves to chew and squish things in her mouth so she didn't swallow them whole)...she had blue poop to prove it! Yuck! I'd say you are more than fine at Sophie's age...but that's just my little opinion...

You have scared me, Ped gave me the green light for berries around 9-10 mos. Blueberries are very messy, but he likes them.

Sam has been eating berries since he was 9 months old. He didn't get blueberries until he was over 12 months though. He gets strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and any other berries we can find! We do cut up the strawberries, but the rest he gets whole.

Lots of berries here too- and we are way conservative on starting new foods, no egg, fish, or nuts here. Heck we even gave Kayla some blueberries last week.
