I am bf'ing and have had a horrible head cold all week. I have been toughing it out without taking anything so far, but I can't take it anymore. Does anyone know if there is anything that is safe to take for sinus pain and congestion?

Thank you!!

Hi Robyn -

I'm sorry I can't help on this issue, but this was the only way I could find to thank you for your Good Start coupons! I really appreciate it. It was a hard cost climb back to a brand-name formula and one that is only sold in smaller can sizes (25.7 oz is the biggest). SO, your coupons have gone a long way to helping us feel better ... and DD feels completely better. She has no tummy problems now, so we're happy!

Thanks again - good luck with the head cold. Bummer - I'll be thinking of you!

You can take Tylenol & Sudafed when you're breastfeeding. I have a list my OBGYN gave me of "approved" medicines for pregnancy & breastfeeding. My daughter's pediatrician concured after I had her. Nyquil is also on there & I was VERY happy when I got a bad head cold while I was pregnant! :) Hope you feel better soon!

My Ped. told me that it was OK to take Claritin. The only side-effect this has on Mom is that the amount of milk you may can go down. Same as with Benadryl.

I would recommend checking with your child's Dr. just to make sure, no matter what you take.

Ugh. I used to take Sudafed as well. But it keeps me awake at night (or at least disrupts my sleep so I don't feel well rested). One trick I've found is to use those "Breathe Right" strips on my nose at night. They definitely help keep my nasal passages more open & make breathing a little easier when I'm trying to sleep with a cold.

Here's a link that lists a bunch of medications that are considered safe while breastfeeding.
