How important is being able to use a battery pack? I am planning on getting a Medela pump and see some of them come with one and some do not. Thanks!

I found the battery pack essential. I have pumped in a car, in an airport, and countless other places where there were no electric outlets.

But the most important thing was that I forgot my power cord one day and I was still able to pump due to the batteries.

The Ameda Purely Yours pump does not need a battery pack, it takes batteries right in the motor itself. That is one reason I chose it over the Medela Pump in Style.

I didn't have a battery pack with 1st child, but with my baby now I have it. I love having it, especially for when baby is a newborn. We went to theme parks that were a couple hours away. I was able to pump in the backseat and have a bottle waiting for baby, and not having to stop to feed him. My ds is now about 5 mos, and I have used it about 6 times. So I haven't used it a ton of times, but those times I have needed it - it came in handy. I get so engorged with milk those first few months, that it is nice to be able to pump whenever I need to if I am not with baby or if we are traveling.

I never used one and BF for 6 months strong and am a working Mom. Yeah, I guess I could have used one, but it was not essential since I did without.

SIL was to send me a thing to use for the car battery, but never did. I always was able to find an outlet when needed. I was not modest, so maybe the lobby of a women's room in a airport is not great, but it did its job and I was able to relieve myself.

I used the battery pack many times in the airport, and you can use it in the car too (save yourself the money on the car adaptor).

I leave my power cord at work so I use the battery pack at home and when I'm out of the office. It's been essential for me.

I also found it essential, for the few times I pumped where there were no outlets (my usual pumping location was occupied and I ended up in a supply closet!!), when we had a power outage, in the car, and when I forgot my plug. The PIS, for one, doesn't seem to work as well with the battery though, and it runs them down quickly.
