DS is having cereal now. He's enjoying it and lunges for the food when he wants more. But, he grabs my hand or the spoon and really tries to get it in his mouth himself. I'm afraid that he's going to jam it in so hard that it's going to hurt the back of his mouth! Is there a spoon that he could use that somehow would be safer? Or are there foods I can start working towards that he can feed himself? He's coming up to 6 months.

Ha Ha, just wait until he is older since it gets much more fun!

It usually worked to have Ryan distracted with another spoon or some other plastic utensil so he had his own interest.

Since he is so young for solids, I would use a mesh feeder with a frozen bm cube in it (for some reason, I think I remember you bfing). This way he can practice holding something. It is going to take a little practice but this is a great thing to use without worrying about choking.

I just got some spoons (I don't know the brand) that have a totally flexible bowl on them. They are brightly colored and sold in a 6 pack at BRU. They would be a good choice if you are worried about DB. I find them almost too soft/flexible!

I was really worried about DD jamming the spoon in the back of her mouth also. It took my mom to reassure me that she won't hurt herself. She hasn't either, although sometimes she does make herself gag a bit. You might want to just give him his own spoon to hold onto. It makes it way less of a battle, even if you have to scoop the food in around it. :)

There is a spoon/fork set that has a pacifier-like guard to prevent the baby from feeding too deeply. Unfortunately, I can't remember what website I saw it, and I just did a bit of searching to find it again. If I bump into it I'll send it to you.
At least something exists...somewhere....

Hi again--

These are similar to what I saw, but still not the one I was thinking of:

Finally, I found it! The item was in a stack of coupons from Gerber. It is a "Lil Dipper". When I registered for Gerber online, they sent me a $1.00 off coupon for the spoon set. Here's Gerber's link:

That's neat looking. I'll have to look for it at the store.

Thanks!
