View Full Version : Salty breastmilk?

I'm officially not BFing anymore, even though I've offered DS the breast a couple of times since last Sunday. He's not interested, but he usually will go so far as to latch and release.

In the meantime, in order to avoid uncomfortable breasts, I've been doing a little massage/manual expression when I'm in the shower. Today, I got milk on my fingers, and out of curiousity, I tasted it. It was salty. Now, when DS was still exclusively BF, I tasted the milk too (mostly because I leaked all over and had it all over my hands, but also because I was curious), and it was really sweet. I'm wondering if maybe DS stopped liking BFing because the milk was salty?

I can't figure out what's going on - I've searched online, and haven't found anything particularly helpful, so I'm hoping someone on the boards can help.

FWIW, I haven't done anything different eating-wise, I've had a few more glasses of wine in the past two months than usual for me, but nothing more than two or so glasses once a week. I also started exercising regularly, but everything has been low-intensity.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Thanks for posting this. I checked out the links and learned something new. I had no idea that breastmilk would begin to taste salty if it had not been expressed (or baby had not nursed) for a while. Good to keep in mind for the future.
