I bought some cans of mandarin oranges to throw into fruit salad and spinach salad and come to find out Jack loves them. The problem is that he eats them in an outrageous amount and still wants more. He had a whole can at lunch time and then went into the pantry and got another can after dinner. He would have eaten another whole can if I had let him. Is this a problem? Or should I just chalk it up to another phase. TIA.
Any one else have a child who does this? His other hot food is the pumpkin muffins I make him. I think he would eat 3 of them a day if I let him. I keep them covered with a towel so he can't see them throughout the day otherwise it "Punkin', punkin', punkin!"

My DS loves mandarin oranges and will eat a can at a sitting (which i let him...though later on at diaper change time i sometimes regret that!). He also LOVES pumpin pie (the custard part!). He'll sit w/ the pie plate and dig in (lately i've taken to making pumpkin "pie" without the crust for this purpose!).

Hey B- I was laughing as I read this. My moms favorite story is about the time she found all of this strange stuff in my diaper- called the pedi and he asked if maybe I had eaten somthing different. It was the ton of mandarin oranges I had consumed and the membrane stuff passed right through :) So, no advice but just a warning about what you might find in his dipe :) I wish I could get M to eat them- I've tried!! Punkin muffins sound very yummy though!

I've heard a similar story relating to myself from my sister....reminding me about the time she was feeding me blueberries...and more blueberries...and more blueberries!

Colin loves them too, but suffers a little when they come out the other end. He gets a light rash if he eats too many (they are very acidic) and usually needs to eat a banana the same day to, ahem, offset some of the effects of the oranges...

DS loves mandarin oranges too. I get the kind that's in a little plastic cup instead of the can to help limit his intake. I could easily eat can after can of them, too, if I had the chance, but I know I suffer for it, and he's got a much tenderer bum than I do...

I only give him 4 of the little 1/2 cup servings a week, to make sure that his diet is as well rounded as possible.

Gracie inhales them too! She can eat a whole can in two seconds. I just get the ones in light syrup and rinse them, and I hope for the best. ;)

Mmm--pumpkin muffins? Please share the recipe!

Yes! I would love the recipe for the muffins. I gave Ava a little taste of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and she was hooked! I think the muffins would be a big hit here.

P.S. Ava also loves the mandarin oranges!

Lane inhales them too. I just don't give them to him more than once a day because his bum does get a little red/tender from the acid. He has them a few times a week.

And I hear you about the pumpkin muffins!! One of our recent discoveries is the pumpkin bread mix from Trader Joe's. You put canned pumpkin in it and it is delish!! When we have some, I give it to Lane with some cream cheese on it and he loves it.

As always-you girls are awesome. Yup-he definately gets the membrane poops but otherwise it doesn't seem to bother him. I just start getting paranoid that he has some vitamin deficiency and this is his body's way of taking care of it. I guess they are just plain yummy. Like the punkins!

PUMPKIN MUFFINS
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
3 large eggs
1 16 oz can of solid pumpkin pack
3 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 350'. Line muffin tins with cupcake paper things. Beat sugars and oil in large bowl. Add eggs and pumpkin. Sift flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, salt and baking powder into another large bowl. Stir into pumpkin mixture in 2 additions. Mix in walnuts, if desired.

Divide batter equally into 18 muffin tins. Bake until tester inserted into center comes out clean. 40-45 minutes.

To make them even more delicious-I make plain ones for Jack but add ghiradelli chocolate chips to my half of the batter. Yum!

Enjoy! and Thank you all again!

ETA-I can't believe I mentioned poop on the same post as these yummy muffins. Oh well. I guess thats the life of a Mommy....

Yum! I can't wait to make them. I love canned pumpkin and always have some on hand. I seem to get boring and just put some in pancake batter.....yummy. :)

Thanks for the recipe Barbara.

Yummmmm! Thank you so much for the recipe. These are going to be perfect for DD's birthday celebration at daycare. Of course, I will have to make a trial run before hand and think I'll add the chips ;)

Love all the like-minded people -- I read your post and the first thing I thought was I have to ask for the recipe!

Jack loves them too, though he has switched his allegiance to helping me plow through a crate of clementines.
