View Full Version : How much fruit is too much?

We were just in Michigan during blueberry season - we wound up going through a five pound flat every few days. Also bought raspberries, peaches and blackberries. Jonathan loved it and would eat two big bowls and ask for more. He never got any GI upset from it but his stools were a little looser than usual - some of that may have been that we had to use Huggies instead of Pampers and I don't think they're as absorbent. Anyway, we're back home, blueberries are on sale this week, and Jonathan again wanted a huge bowlful, on top of the chicken and milk and cheese he ate for dinner. Any ideas on how much is too much? We gave him Cheerios last night after two handfuls of blueberries and he was much less enthusiastic, but he did eat them. I'm having a hard time telling genuine hunger from the liking for sweets.

IMO, unless he's getting an upset tummy, let him have all the fruit he wants and you can afford. Fresh fruit is much better for him than Cheerios, and you can get Cheerios any time of the year. Just rejoice in having a toddler who really likes his fruit!

When he starts to look like Violet Beauregard in Willy Wonka, then it's time to cut him off. ;)

My completely uneducated guess is that he'll eventually self-regulate. Blueberries and other berries are so chock full of good stuff that I'm sure it's fine if he indulges while they're in season.

Okay, so Dora is now eating more, but her likes and dislikes are still unpredictable. Today I gave her rice with half a chopped TJ's turkeyball, chopped broccoli, marinara sauce, and a little melted cheese. The new thing is the turkeyball. She ate a couple of bites, then started spitting it out. I tried giving her a separate piece of just the turkeyball, and she chewed for a while, then spit it out. Is it the texture? Taste? The only thing I had on hand was the last of our blueberries, of which she has completely finished, half a banana, and the rest of the cheese stick I used in the rice. She ate all of it, and started in on the watermelon I cut up. I guess she's getting watermelon for her snack.

Yesterday she rejected a rice/meat mixture with marinara. She ate it before, so I don't know if suddenly she's decided she doesn't like marinara. In any case, it seems like all she will eat for sure is fruit and cheese. I'm having trouble balancing it with something else unless I find another way for her to eat the rice/broccoli mixture. Maybe with just cheese? What's another protein source? Tonight I'm making chili for us, so I'll try the beans. She liked it last week, but who knows?!

LOL, Katie, I asked the EXACT same queston a few weeks ago.
DD a fruit monster these days as well. If it doesn't give her a tummy ache or loose stools (which it hasn't so far), I let her have as much as she wants.

ETA: Watch out for the bluebeery poops. Blueberrues seem to only get digested up to a point. ; )

Okay, but what do you do if your dc doesn't seem to want to eat anything except fruit and cheese? For 3 meals?

I rejoice that she's having something besides yogurt and am darn proud that at least it's healthy. :P (I'm being serious despite the smiley, btw)

I continue to offer a "new food" in hopes that she will take it, along with her standard fruit and cheese.

Just short of one pint at a single sitting is too much.

I trust this needs no further elaboration.

This is good to know. I am glad volumn trials were held at your house and not mine. :P

I used to think that there is no such thing as too much fruit until this Tuesday-Wednesday. On a flight from Chicago to Amsterdam DS had 2.5 fruit bowls of blueberries, pineapple, grapes etc. About 10 mins later he tried to grab an empty glass informing me he was about to throw up. I got an airline paper bag instead. Let me tell you those bags are not very sturdy :( . All that fruit plus various liquids ended up on my jeans, which smelled special for the rest of our trip (for at least another 12 hours).
