(Not sure if this belongs in Feeding, so I'm posting in The Lounge since it applies to me, not the baby. Mods move if you think it necessary.)

Does anyone else here get nauseaous while bfing? I had this a bit when I nursed E; I couldn't eat at all while nursing and could only drink water, nothing else. This time it is worse; not only can I not eat or drink anything but water, but I actually start to feel slightly nauseous. It's worse if I've just eaten a meal. It's not nearly as bad as morning sickness, but it's uncomfortable and often puts me in a bad mood.

Hmm...I haven't, but do you think it could be dehydration? I know I tend to feel nauseous if I haven't had enough extra water. I hope you're able to figure it out!

hugs,

Eileen

I'm wondering the same thing as Eileen - does what you've eaten before nursing make any difference?

No advice, but huge hugs, Jen! That sounds so uncomfortable. :(

Like the others said, stay hydrated. I get ravishing thirst the minute DS latches on.
I wonder if a tummy-settling tea of some sort would help you -- ginger? fennel?

I will try drinking more water; I feel like I drink water all day long, but it's very likely I'm still not getting enough. And yes, I get incredibly thirsty as soon as I start nursing, too.

eta: and it doesn't seem to make a difference what I've eaten beforehand, although it is worse if I've just eaten.

This happened to me while still in the hospital. The lactation nurse told me it was hormonal and did not occur very often in nursing mothers but occasionally. She didn't offer any suggestions to alleviate it, though. As a new mom, I was too overwhelmed to think to ask. I just kinda worked through it. It did get better after a few weeks.

I have the same thing! Every time I start to nurse, I get a wave of nausea. It certianly makes nursing less enjoyable. I find that nursing in bed (lying down) helps me. I have also noticed that I am much more sensitive to car sickness now, too.

I noticed the same thing about lying down, too (just yesterday, in fact). I already do a lot of nursing in bed at night, but duh it hadn't occured to me that I could nurse during the day like that! lol

Crossing my fingers that I won't start getting car sick....

I heard it is the surge of progesterone from let-down. I had the same thing for about the first 6 months, but it didn't happen all the time. Seems like it happened more often when I was lying down.

But the good thing to know is that it does eventually get better!

I started nursing Mika in the side-lying position almost exclusively after the huge nursing demand calmed down a little. Before, I nursed her in the side-lying as much as possible, but nursed her on the nursing pillow when I needed to eat or felt like sitting. But eventually we moved to nursing side-lying whenever I'm not out and about with her. It works quite well. I never thought about it, but Amy's thought about the progesterone during let-down makes a lot of sense. I hope it fades for you AND that you don't end up with car sickness!
