View Full Version : Why Am I So Darn Scared To Give DD Peanut Butter/Peanuts?

No reason to think she's allergic, but I keep putting it off. She is now 2.5yo and I feel it is pretty safe at this point. She has had a couple of things with a little peanut butter/peanut product in it, but never anything "chock full o' nuts", KWIM? I bought these little peanut butter cookies that have actual peanuts in them from our grocery store bakery. Last night, DD picked up the container and asked for a cookie. DH looked at me questioningly and I freaked (well, sort of) and said "NO! She can't have one of those!"

Help me let go of my unreasonable fear!

Maybe it's all the scary stories you've heard? A peanut allergy is scary sounding esp. considering all the things around us that could cause a reaction. I'm pretty lax about(we started at a year with both) but I definitely understand your trepidation.

If she's been exposed to nuts and hasn't had a reaction, I'd say you're fine but maybe one of the more knowledgeable ladies will chime in about it.

I starting using sunbutter(sunflower seeds) and both the kids *love* it. I bought it for myself and didn't like it but it may be worth a shotwith your dd if you'd like the convenience of it at times.

I love them most when they are sleeping.--Me

I understand your fear, too. DS was tested for the peanut allergy, which was negative, but I'm still nervous about starting him on it.

FWIW- I haven't read anything about it yet, but my friend just saw her allergist the other day who said there are new findings (yet again) on peanut allergies. He was saying that they are finding a higher instance of the allergy in Enland, where they don't generally introduce PB until the kids are around 4.5. My friend and I are both BF, and were both told *not* to eat peanuts while BF, and her allergist said that now it's recommended a nursing mama eat a handful of peanuts a day. It's always changing.

So, I guess my point it- it sounds like the earlier the introduction the better. Just pick a day, take a deep breath, and go for it! Oh...and have the bottle of Benedryl on hand just in case!!!

Good luck!

I think it's all the reporting of peanut reactions. I mean, I know it's getting more common, but sometimes it sounds like the majority of kids are allergic.

Maybe you can spread a little creamy peanut butter on toast, and try giving that to her. See what happens.
