instead of those loooooong http links in some posts, the posters have ingeniously (sp?) added a link using tinyurl.com. how is this done?

Just go to www.tinyurl.com.

There's a screen there that asks for the original URL link. You paste it in and it generates a tinyurl version. You then take the tinyurl version, copy it and paste it into your post here.

Simple! :)

Amy -
Here is another option that I like to use -

Type [link:your url|a description]

What you will see is a description of your link that can be clicked on to follow the URL. I like this better because I don't have to go to another site to do it.

I'll respond to this with an actual example so you can see it.

I am linking to Laurie Berkner's CD, Buzz Buzz, on amazon.com.

Here is the original link:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004S36S/qid=1101840493/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl15/104-1209559-8800734?v=glance&s=music&n=507846

Here it is with Tiny URL:
http://tinyurl.com/5foqg

Here it is with the method I described above:
I typed link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004S36S/qid=1102046748/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl15/104-1209559-8800734?v=glance&s=music&n=507846|Laurie Berkner, Buzz Buzz (with brackets around the whole thing; can't show them because I don't want the link to show)

which results in......

[link:www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004S36S/qid=1102046748/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl15/104-1209559-8800734?v=glance&s=music&n=507846|Laurie Berkner, Buzz Buzz]

Mary, that is really cool. I never would have thought of that, but that makes a lot of sense!

So if I wanted to link to my website (which is not a long website, but just for practice), I could do this:

[link:http://www.chemicalgraphics.com/kaya|Kaya pics]

Hey, it works! :) Thanks Mary!

You're welcome! I think it's pretty cool too. I forgot to give Jennifer (JElaineB) credit for introducing me to it. Thanks Jennifer!

It's a | - I don't know if all keyboards are the same, but on mine, it's the top character (i.e. press shift to get it) on the back slash key. I don't know it's official name though. Anyone???

Mary--
They're called pipes (or is it singular?), but I can't figure out how to make them work for me. Can you look at my syntax:

link:paste in copied link|paste in title of CD
With no spaces between any of the parts hasn't worked for me.

paste in copied link|paste in title of CD
With or without spaces before & after pipe hasn't worked either!

I've tried straight brackets [], curlies {} and parentheses () around the whole thing, too! I'm stumped....

Can you see what I am missing here? Thanks a bunch!!

edited to add more things that I have tried...I really want this to work!

Lisa -
The way you have it first should work with straight brackets around the whole thing.

Reply to this message with your attempt and click on 'Check here if you want to format your message in plain text.' That way I can see exactly what you're trying.

ETA: Thanks for letting me know what it's called! :)

Here's exactly what I typed

[link:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000I8A3/qid=1101934871/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/102-8419737-8670501|John Lithgow Singing]

This is what I get: http://tinyurl.com/6krfz Of course the link doesn't work. Come to think of it, the link you used in your example didn't work for me, either! It took me to a Microsoft page.

I did check and see if this is a Mozilla issue--but have had no more luck with IE.

Thanks again!

You're right, mine didn't work. :( I just updated it and took out the ' http:// ' and it worked. Try just starting with www.

Trying this again....

Cool! I finally got it to work for me---I was trying to type this string into the tinyurl.com entry box. No wonder it wouldn't work!!

So, I assume that this little trick works here because of the message format of these boards....Does anyone know how to make this trick work to produce a 'nick-named' link that I could put in an email?

and, thanks again, Mary!

Yay Lisa!!!!

As far as e-mail, if html is allowed in the recipients e-mail, I think it should work. You can try sending a test message to me at mary_harling at yahoo dot com.
