When I buy a pre-bagged 5lb bag of regular baking potatoes, I leave them in the original bag and store in a dry, dark place. So why do they sprout within just a few days? Any tips?

It's probably too warm in your storage place.

Don't store your onions anywhere near your potatoes. Part of it is also seasonal. This time of year I generally only buy what I'm going to use this week because they do sprout so fast.

I just realized I am storing the potatoes in the closet with the water heater :) that might be my problem! I will try a different closet :) thank you both!
