I have never tasted this, but have always thought by looking at the picture that it looks very similar to my mom's recipe for apple cake. I will track down the recipe either at home or from her if I don't have it and post it when I do.

this is a super yummy and very easy recipe that i got from my mil. not sure who aunt bess is though??
eta: it was mil's grandma's aunt bess, so this is a good old fashioned recipe!

AUNT BESS'S DESSERT aka apple cake :)

4 cups chopped apples
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup oil
1 cup chopped nuts (can be omitted for kids/allergies)
2 eggs (beaten)
2 tsp vanilla

Mix the above - then add after mixing together the following

2 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt

Pour into 9 x 13" loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or till done.
Good with whipped cream or warmed with ice cream.
