Anyone have any tips on which herbs can be grown at home in the NE esp during the winter in a pot.

i am not a real green thumb but I wanted to try for some basil, parsley, rosemary , thyme maybe...I also hate bugs hence the lack of live plants in the house...

Could I just bring some of the herbs I have now outside inside but re-plant them into smaller pots?
Thanks

I'm not sure if replanting outside plants into smaller pots will work very well, but I guess it depends on the size of the plants and the size of the pots. The worse thing that would happen is they'd all die, and then you'd know for next year. :) (Trying to remember what I learned in school about plant roots)...Plant roots have very small root fibers at their ends, and these can be injured pretty easily when you dig up a plant, thus reducing the plant's vitality. My hunch is that the transplanted plants would not do well, but I'd love to be proven wrong!

I believe my dad (who lives in NYC) grows chives or garlic chives all year long on his windowsill. Not the most exciting herb, but they are easy to grow and maintain, and tasty in omelets. Because they are grass-like, he is able to grow them in a pretty small pot, and they don't complain that their roots are running out of space.

HTH!

My husband is great with herbs outside, but we have had varying degrees of success moving some of them inside in colder weather in the NE. One year, we had a basil plant that lasted the entire winter next to the French door in our kitchen where it could get plenty of sun. Unfortunately, we have tried many times with rosemary to no avail...I think that because we have forced hot air heat, it gets too dry for some of the herbs that are drier in texture. I think you might be able to do well bringing thyme in the house. Any time we have grown thyme, it has grown like a weed. Last year, we left it outside for the winter, it died, and it came back in the spring even though I don't know if it's supposed to or not. I don't know if that is any help. Good luck!

We have 2 Rosemary plants in pots that I put on the porch during the summer/warm weather and then bring them in during the winter and put them in front of the sunny window. One of them is probably at least 6 years old now, so it's doing quite well. I also have chives in giant pots on the porch (plenty of sun) and during the winter, I just leave them out there, but they come back the next year. They're very easy to grow. Basil only grows for a season (annual?), so you need to replant them every year. I think parsley can be grown year round, though I haven't tried it yet.
