Self-Cleaning oven question

Normally I line my oven w/tin foil but I didnt do it when we moved into this house.
Can anyone with experience tell me what it's like to use the self-clean function?
Specifically if the house gets all smokey as the bits are burned off????

With my oven not only does the kitchen get smokey, it also gets pretty stinky with a chemical smell (even though I don't use any chemicals). I always wait for a nice day outside and open as many doors and windows as possible.

It also takes a really long time (at least for my oven). And I will not leave an oven on when I am not home. So, find out how long your cycle will take and plan to be home- with open windows- during that time.
