My mom insists that Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy started off on Sesame Street. My dad and I think she's nuts!

I don't ever rememeber Kermit/Miss Piggy/or any of the Muppets on Sesame Street.

Do you?

Kermit was absolutely on sesame street. Whether or not he started there, I don't know.

According to this Wiki entry on Kermit, he was in fact on Sesame Street and that's where he got his "big break":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kermit_the_frog

Not so for Miss Piggy, though. According to this - she didn't come along until later on The Muppet Show:

ETA: I don't remember either of them on SS either!

Kermit started on Sesame Street. Piggy started on the Muppet show (in fact in the first few episodes her voice changes a few times as she switches between Frank Oz and the guy who voices Janice, I think (on edit, it was Richard Hunt).

On edit: A few more details courtesy of wiki:

An early version of Kermit appeared in 1955, in a 5-minute puppet show for WRC-TV's Sam and Friends. The prototype Kermit was created from a green ladies' coat that Henson's mother had thrown in the trash can, and two ping pong balls for eyes. The early Kermit was a sort of lizard-like creature; Kermit's first appearance as a frog was in the television special Hey Cinderella in 1969, and he's been a frog ever since.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kermit_the_frog

And about Piggy:

Miss Piggy began as a minor character in The Muppet Show TV series, but gradually developed into one of the central characters of the show.

I do remember Kermit on Sesame Street, but not very often or for long. He always did the "breaking news" bit, dressed in a trench coat and hat. I think he was doing a spoof of Walter Chroncite (sp?) or some other news head, but I was REALLY little. Hated it actually!

OK, I think I just outed myself as being VERY old!!

I don't remember Kermit on Sesame Street. Maybe I just didn't pay close attention!

Kermit was on Sesame Street until the Muppet Show muppets were bought by another company and Children's Television Workshop lost the rights to use him. He did the news and that not easy being green bit there. He is also on Christmas Eve on Sesame Street with Big Bird trying to figure out how Santa gets down the chimneys since he is so fat.

Kermit is mentioned in a couple of my childhood Sesame Street books that were published in the mid to late 70's. I can't attest to him actually being on SS though because we didn't have a TV until I was older.

I'm a Sesame Street'aholic. I love this show to pieces, especially the classic. Kermit started way back before Sesame as a version of what we know today by Jim Henson on another TV show (a PP references this). He was a heavy staple on Sesame Street during the classic, beginning years for quite some time, Late Breaking News Flash (I loved Rapunzel), and I think it's him doimg the classic ABC's song with the blonde little girl where she sings "A, B, C, D, E, F, Cookie Monster!"

Miss Piggy was The Muppet Show only.

Kermit still has "rights" to appear on Sesame Street and is the only muppet owned by Disney that still has rights on Sesame, but I"m not sure how the business deal reads. Disney owns all of the Jim Henson muppets from the Muppet Show, but they don't own the Sesame Street muppets. Kermit straddles that fence.

I posted a very long time ago with links to tons of old classic Sesame clips. Do a search, it should come up. More the vignettes, not the muppets, really. I'll see if I can find the link.

Oh yes. "Sesame Street Old School" in several volumes. The first season -- and first episode particularly -- are astounding. The clips will blow you away, and the whole storyline where Gordon leads a little girl that's not his by the hand down the street introducing her to such a wonderful neighborhood street, and Susan hanging out the window saying, "you'll come by for cookies later, won't you?" Oh, how times have changed . . .

YEs, there was actually an article in NY times, I think, about old school SS being "creepy" b/c of these scenes. The article described it as "gritty", and they rate it as not for kids b/c, among other things, Cookie Monster smokes a pipe during monsterpiece theater and then eats it! I had to laugh

. . . sorry about tha hijack, Stacy!

Liz, let me tell you, I could sit there for hours and hours, and my DS loved almost every clip I found. Just do a classic sesame street search on You Tube, and they'll all come up. Things you haven't seen in forever. FOREVER. Things you forgot were there. I get so nostalgic for this stuff, I just cry! And for DS to love this stuff, too? Makes my heart melt.

The entire first epsiode of Sesame is posted on You Tube in 10 minute increments, and one of the early scenes is Bert talking to Ernie in the bathtub. The cut of this clip is some flavor of pre-broadcast quality, and you can see Frank Oz in his thick hornrimmed glasses in the lower right-hand corner doing Bert -- you can see Bert on his arm. Just a bare sliver, but you can see it. This does NOT show up on the DVD.

Kermit did do the Sesame Street "breaking news" where he interviewed characters from nursery rhymes. I remember "Jack B. Nimble" and "the old lady who lived in a shoe."

Miss Piggy was on the show "The Muppet Show", which was on on Saturday nights at 6:30 on CBS. I remember as a kid going to Mass at 5, stopping at McDonald's and then getting home and eating the McDonald's in front of the TV watching the Muppet Show. The characters from the Muppet Show made 3 Muppet movies. "The Muppet Movie" ; the second one with Miss Piggy on the motorcyle; and "Muppets Go Hollywood" or something like that (with Miss Piggy and Joan Rivers having a field day in the cosmetics dept.) where Kermit loses his memory and also features a video in there of the "Muppet Babies."

Sesame Street only had 1 movie called 'Follow That Bird"

On YouTube, you can find some great outtakes of teh Muppets too.

I've seen on TV recently the ads for the 50th anniversary of Kermit and/or the Muppets. Since Sesame Street started in 1969, then at least Kermit must have been around before then. The Muppet Show didn't come out til the late 70's. I've seen episodes with Kermit the Frog as a reporter on Sesame Street- there's a cute one where he's trying to talk to Prince Charming while he's yelling up to Repunzel to let down her hair. It's really cute.

So, I guess Miss Piggy really got herself an older man, um, frog. :)

ETA: duh (boinks head), if I had read the other posts, I'd have seen that this mystery was already solved. please excuse my impatience...

Hey, I am only 27 and I recall Kermit on Sesame Street. Of course, Sesame Street reruns were on a lot on PBS when I was little.

I "remember" him too (probably reruns, though).

There's actually a commercial that always ran here in Louisiana (not sure if it ran other places) where Kermit encourages people to "save his home" - the wetlands. I think it's actually still in use...I swear I've seen it recently. So anyway, when I was little, I thought that Sesame Street was filmed in a swamp. The fact that they never feature a swamp in the actual show never seemed to bother me. Kermit said he lived in a swamp, end of story. :)
