Don't forget to check TJ Maxx and marshalls. You may not find them on clearance anymore (they were all on clearance around halloween), but I have noticed that their prices on backpacks seem to be lower than target, etc.. They also seem to have the smaller bags more appropriate for preschoolers. I also like children place's preschooler backpack, but I don't know if it is something they are carrying right now. I got one at the CP outlet for only $1!!!!

Check Disney too... I picked up three princess ones for $2.99 each (+ 15% coupon!) I think they had some on line too...

I don't know if they are too big for what you are looking for but the hanna andersson be right backpacks are $10 at the outlets and matching lunch bags are $5 if they have them left. (31104 for girls designs) I bought one on Friday. They had the peacock design, the leopard print, and the thousand flowers at the one I called. The dimensions seem to be bigger than others posted,
15 1/2"x 12 1/2" x 6 1/2". I can't speak to quality since this is the first one we have ordered so I am hoping it compares to the quality of their clothing.

This has been my favorite backpack for a small child:
http://www.yakpak.com/catalog/partdetail.aspx?PartNo=6072

It is the Dickies brand at YakPak. They sell them on Amazon, too. There are SO many colors and patterns. It is a small backpack that easily fits on a small body. DS used it for two years at preschool. Now we use it for our dining out bag -- it holds crayons, toys, paper, etc, to keep them busy wehn we go out to dinner.

We had bought ds a "preschool-sized backpack" only to be told that the teachers prefer a larger backpack that will fit artwork, etc...

Just a FYI :)

LL Bean's Junior Original backpack is perfect. We just ordered one and it is a tad smaller than a regular sized backpack but will still hold a standard size folder plus lots more. I love ours and can't wait for DS to start preschool next week! He picked out the lime color and it is GLOWING so be careful. Sent it back and received the red and it is perfect for a boy!

There was a free shipping code on retailmenot when we ordered ours.

These are definitely not a deal, but they are SOOOO cute. I got one for my 2.5 year old, and it has adjustable strap, so it fits him fine. If you search for "Stephen Joseph backpack," you will find lots of places online that carry them. Here's a link to the place I got ours from. I ordered it Friday afternoon and had it on Tuesday.

There's two pages of them (pages 5 & 6, I think). Girls are on the first page and boys/neutral are on the next page.

Enjoy!

JCPenney's store has the halfpints on sale for $19.99. Which makes them a better deal since you don't have to pay any shipping. Had most of the selection that ebags has- Now if I can only find a Penneys coupon to make it even a better deal!!

e got the LL bean jr bkpk too. We have used it to travel several times, but it will be perfect for preschool too (first yr). You can stuff an amazing amt of stuff into it and I like the reflective trim on it. The red and blue are perfect, I got one of each color for each of my boys.

I just ordered a bratsack http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=40198 for DS. All he needs it for is a spare change of clothes for our mom and toddler class. I love that she re-uses fabric so it's totally eco friendly. No worries about lead or bad plastics either since it's all fabric. I custom ordered a puppy one, so it'll be a week or so but I can't wait to get it!

i picked up one on sale last year at children's place around sept/oct. think it was under $10 and has held up great! we're able to store dd's clothes, etc at her school, lunch is provided so we just use the backpack to send stuff back and forth between the two homes. holds 2-3 changes of clothes, 2 pairs of shoes and videos. :)

i'm thinking this one for air travel.
