View Full Version : Anyone ever heard of allergies like this?

My mouth starts to tingle and itch when i eat raw apples, walnuts and peapods and soy anything. Those are the only foods I"ve noticed so far. So, no McD's apple dippers but cooked apples are ok. When I say itch, I mean want-to-comb-my-tongue kind of itching.

This just started in the past year. What could be causing it?

I get the same reaction to walnuts. I just figure it's a minor allergic reaction and avoid walnuts. I usually don't react to foods with the "processed on the same equipment" warnings though, so I figure it is pretty minor reaction for me.

I grew into this reaction as well - I used to be able to eat walnuts (yummy sandies cookies) although they have always tasted "off" to me.

When DH eats too many raw carrots, he get like that.

My dad is the same way with raw apples, but he's fine with cooked. His is worse, though. He can't even cut a raw apple or his eyes get all irritated.

Allergies are so weird!

I ate something last night, can't figure out what it was, but after dinner my lips were itchy. It was weird.

What you are describing is oral allergy syndrome - happens with raw fruits and vegetables (more common in people with seasonal allergies) - my husband's allergist recommends avoiding certain raw fruits and veggies and gargling with benadryl to releive the "itchiness"

The nuts however, could indicate a nut allergy - that you should look into as it can be deadly and you should be prepared with an epi- pen if you are indeed allergic.

I get the same reaction from raw cake batter, biscuit dough, undercooked grits. Must be a wheat/corn issue for me.

I'm gettin' itchy just thinkin about it aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!

Must be minor for you though b/c your reaction so far is just itching. I am allergic to "something" out there that causes me to go into anaphalatic (sp?) shock. Emergency room here I come. But I don't know what it is.

Maybe it will pass if not, maybe see a doc.

I used to be on a medication that cause me to have a reaction like that. I would use my teeth to scratch my tongue until it bled.

I hope you get it figured out soon!

Ohhh, yeahh. Bleagh!

Happens with anything like wheat or rye with me.

It's like a big red sign that says "keep away!"

Oh my gosh, Trina! Do you at least have an epi pen?!? If not, you should get a prescription for on one, even if you don't know what's causing it.

Scary scary!!!

Just wondering. You could be developing an allergy to apples, etc. Or you could be developing an allergy to something ON the apples, etc.

Also, consider if you are taking any new or relatively new medications that might be interacting with something in or on what you've eaten. Maybe ask your doc or pharmacist if you symptoms sound like one of the "rare side effects" documented for the medication.

I'm not taking any new medication that would cause it. And 2 months ago whenI was in the delivery room being prepped to deliver twins via c-section (so imagine 2 teams of NICU specialists, Anesthesiologist (sp?), nurse anesthetist, and 2 OBs), the nurse doing my paperwork asks what my allergies are. I say "sulfa drugs and apples." Everyone had a good laugh at that.

For the fruits and veggies, as pp said, it's usually associated with seasonal allergies. My daughter has pretty bad outdoor allergies and she's not supposed to eat any raw fruits such as apples, pears and any stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, cherries,etc.). Cooked is OK. She is allowed to eat berries, grapes and citrus fruits raw.

I have moderate outdoor allergies and have a hard time with too many raw carrots, melons. As a pp mentioned, I recently developed a similar reaction to raw batter (can't figure that one out) -- and actually went to the ER for that a few years ago. Turned out it wasn't anaphylaxis, but a strange sensation in my throat.

Basically, if you have reactions to these things, my allergist recommends avoiding them to reduce the possibility of more serious reactions down the road. And my daughter and I are taking allergy shots for the environmental allergies with the hopes of eventually being able to tolerate those fruits & veggies.

Gina

from what I understand it's an oral allergy. I have an oral allergy to apples (my only true allergy-I have several food intollerances). I can eat applesauce but not raw apples. I haven't tried peeled apples-often oral allergies are to apple peel. Apple juice and apples cider are no goes for me too-I think they're not fully cooked and/or have peel.

I get the same way w/ apples, cherries, plums, pears, apricots. I asked an allergist once and he asked if I had seasonal allergies. Turns out it's related to pollen allergies.

Once in high school I had a glass of fresh apple cider and broke out in hives.

I have no problems eating the fruit when it's cooked. I've had this for like 15 years and it hasn't gotten worse or better. I do get jealous of people who can just bite into an apple.

You know, come to think of it, I have problems with peaches and apricots too. I usually love to eat dried apricots but they started doing the same thing. It's interesting that you say it's related to pollen allergies. This would totally make sense because it's just been the past 2 years that my allergies get so much worse when the pollen levels are high. It really does suck to get old. :(
