Definitely memory games or card games like matching or opposites. My ds is 2 1/2 & can also play Candyland & Hullaballoo pretty well, although he loses interest quickly.

I was just going to post to see if anyone has bought any of these Cranium games that are made for 3+ year olds. They look like they would be good but I would love reviews.

Alek is almost 3.5 and he's not ready for chutes and ladders yet. I think hungry hippos would be fun and I'm also thinking of Don't Break the Ice (one of my childhood favorites).

Hullabaloo
Cariboo
Tumblin Monkeys - all time favorite for wide range of ages
Candyland - we've worked up to using the "special" cards

We have Go Away, Monsters for my just over 2 year olds and they love it. I have heard Snail's Pace Race is good, but maybe too young. Hisss is another good one, and Haba Orchard. I have also heard good things about Leapin Louie and Cranium Cariboo and Hullabaloo.
This site - www.kidgameratings.com is great. also boardgamegeek.com has some suggestions.
There were a few threads not long ago that might give you more suggestions!

We are big fans, and I have convinced a few friends to get it and their kiddos all love it!

M is 3 and loves CandyLand, Uno, Memory and this old Discovery Toys game called ItsyBitsy Spider. This is what it looks like: http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-ITSY-BITSY-SPIDER-GAME-DISCOVERY-TOYS-1998_W0QQitemZ200199998161QQihZ010QQcategoryZ10022 7QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

My girls like Candyland, but they LOVE the Candyland Castle game. The castle version is very easy and similar to playing bingo.

We have tons of games (I love games :)). The best first games, IME, are Cranium Cariboo, Memory (can play modified versions), Hi-Ho Cherry-O and Candyland. DS also really liked Don't Wake Up Daddy. It is just okay IMO, but DS loved seeing Daddy jolt up.
I really detest Chutes and Ladders because it is too confusing for the child to figure out how to move his/her playing piece. It frustrates me.
Other games that we really like for later are Uno Jr. (we have the Curious George version - very cute!), Balloon Lagoon (probably for 4-5 years - I really enjoy this one) and Monopoly Jr. (again, probably 4 years+).

Good grief, I would only curse someone I hated with that blasted game! If I didn't think it would scar DD#1 for life, I would take a sledgehammer to those stupid ducks.

We like
Candy Land
Go Fish (Leap frog has a cute one that matches letters)
Cranium Hullabaloo-this is this BEST! It is an active game, so DS gets to move around, jump, sing, etc. and it is perfect for cold yucky days.
HTH!

We love Candy Land Castle. Few pieces and none that break easily :).
DD is 20 months and plays as well.

DS's favorite by far is Cariboo. I have given it quite a few times as 3 year old birthday gifts & the moms usually commented that it was a hit with their child.
Also good:
Memory
Dominos
Disney Bingo (uses a DVD)
