I have concerns with melamine and I myself have managed to drop and break Corelle, so I wanted to know if anyone knew of tableware made from polypropolene or polyethylene?

For kids stuff, I like the IKEA plastic plates, cups, and bowls. They are very sturdy polypropylene, cheerful colors, and seem to last forever.

I was just going to say this. I found their large, adult polypropylene cups kinda expensive though (99cents each).

I was going to ask about melamine. Why the concern? I thought polypropylene was the concern, or is it polycarbonate?

I think we don't like melamine b/c you have to be really careful about heating it, even in the dishwasher? Polypropylene is ok, the harder, clear polycarbonate is not.

I didn't get to do a "full" search, but if you click on the 2 links on the bottom of the 1st link, you can read more info. This is 1 of the sites I came up with thru' Google. HTH. I also have a hard time remembering which is which.

I know this is a week later, but I just saw this post adn wanted to pop in to answer a question. The reason many people (including our family) don't use melamine is formaldehyde is used to make the plastic hard, and it can leach out into your food if the plastic is ever heated (dishwasher, microwave).

thanks!

so if it's cleaned in the dishwasher, then used later when cool, it could still leach?
