insect repellent?

We live in an area with lots of mosquito/other insect action during the spring, summer, and early fall. What is safe to use to keep them off babies? Thanks for your help!

We took a vacation to Montana (lots of bugs, not really any where we are) when DS was just over a month old. I asked our ped's office about insect repellant and while they prefer not to put bug spray on infants under 6 months, she said that if it was necessary just to make sure it was deet-free, and keep it off DS's hands and face. We tried to keep him as covered as possible with light layers, and also used citronella candles (they worked really well) whenever we were out on the deck.

Does anyone have feedback on the California Baby insect repellent? I've also heard of something called Repel - anybody tried that? Thanks again.
