Every time DH or I get sick, I wish that we had a good medical reference book - something where you can look up symptoms, and basic home remedies. For example, when DH had the flu (not stomach, but true influenza), I wasn't sure what things to expect, or what to do, since neither of us had gotten the flu before. I was looking at webmd.com, and the like, but a book that I could just pull off the shelf would be so much easier! Any suggestions?

I highly recommend "Smart Medicine For A Healthy Child: A Practical A-to-Z Reference to Natural and Conventional Treatments for Infants and Children" http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Medicine-Healthier-Child-Janet/dp/1583331395/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205887039&sr=8-1
(check out the reviews!!). It's geared towards children, but could easily be used for adults. It has every health topic you'd ever need. From Athlete's foot to whooping cough! For every illness or ailment there are these topics: description along with symptoms, conventional treatment, dietary guidelines, nutritional supplements, herbal treatment, homeopathy, bach flower remedies, accupressure, general recommendations and prevention. It is awesome!!!

I cannot say enough great things about this book!!

You might also check at your local pharmacy. I know we got one at CVS a couple years ago, that was put out BY CVS. It has an index & you just look up symptoms. I think it was only a few dollars but I don't remember.

Thank you both! I actually need a children's book as well, since all we have so far are baby books, for birth-2 years. It's hard to know sometimes if things are as concerning for a 2.5 year old, vs a 3 month old, you know?

Anyway, I'll check our local pharmacy, and hopefully track down the first book as well! Thanks again!

:yeahthat:

I have the same book and was going to recommend it. I initially purchased it with the kids in mind (after first checking it out of the library to peruse) and have used it for myself on multiple occasions.

I also have a book called Taking Care of Your Child: A Parent's Illustrated Guide to Complete Medical Care.

I have the 6th edition, but I see that the 7th edition is now available.
It is more conventional and not as comprehensive as the one above, but has been a helpful resource to us as well.

My step sister got this at her shower and I flipped through it...it's a great resource! I have to get a copy for my shelf...my AAP books have been practically useless.

My Mom bought me this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Medical-Advisor-Alternative-Conventional-Treatments/dp/0737016221/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205946163&sr=8-1

It's big but I use it ALL THE TIME and it has alternative treatments, too, including yoga, diet, etc. Love it.

we have this book and i was going to recommend it also. we also have the one that is more for adults, although it is very similiar to the kid one.. "Smart Medicine for Healthier Living."
http://www.amazon.com/Smart-Medicine-Healthier-Living-Conventional/dp/B00006RGIS/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205946707&sr=8-2

you should know these books are very geared toward the homeopathic/alternative way to 'cure' stuff (which i love, but it may not be what you want). and there are often lots of different suggestions, so you have to pick and choose what to do. for example, for allergies, there's a ton of stuff to try and you could never do them all!

anyway, we also have a book i picked up at the SavOn pharmacy, like the PP mentioned.

good luck!
