My BIL is a pediatrician and told me that last week a couple of studies came out that showed that there is no benefit for delaying introduction of commonly known allergenic foods (peanut butter until 2 or 3, eggs until 1, etc.), with the possible exception of kids with eczema. I found this one link that talks about it:

http://www.chinapost.com.tw/health/children%E2%80%99s%20health%20%20/2008/03/11/146649/Doctors-change.htm

Has anyone else heard about this? My BIL said that he hadn't had time to sit down with the other docs in his practice to determine if their advice would change, but I'm curious what everyone's response is.

That's correct, for kids not at high risk for allergies. But some parents are waiting until the kiddos are old enough to communicate a reaction (tummy hurt, itchy, breathing, throat tight etc

remember, the info is based on the fact that they really don't have much info either way. I believe they're for kids that haven't had reactions at all, or at least to the specific food.

my dd who is allergic to dairy and was to egg, was just skin tested for peanut, tree nut and shellfish. She was negative so we're trialing at home. 2.5 hrs so far so good w/ peanut butter. Before we had to wait until age 5 (we were just avoiding). Now dr says if neg skin test, can trial. (Negative skin tests are 95 or 98% predictive of there being no reactions)
