First bike?

Is it worth getting one from a bike store? How fast do kids outgrow bikes?

I can't say enough positive things about balance bikes. I'm not sure if you are committed to training wheels or not, but it might be worth a consideration. We got a Puky bike for DS for his 3rd bday and he's still riding it at 4. There are a bunch of different companies out there that make balance bikes, and some are adjustable and can be ridden by older/taller kids. Ours ran about $100 if I remember right.

There are some 14 inch ones out there if you want an in-between. My son is very tall (about 95th% for height) so we actually ended up with an 18 incher. It has training wheels. He loves it. It is a Schwinn, it was less than $100.
