I'll let others comment on the 2x/year sale, but travelingtikes.com has Marathons for $219 w/free shipping. I've ordered from them and gotten a seat that was less than a month old!

I noticed albeebaby.com marked down some of thier Britax seats from 2007, including some Marathons. I also noticed they offered free shipping on orders over 100.00

The twice yearly sales are authorized by Britax. If you do a search of the archives here, you will find out more about the times, etc.

I wonder if they are "allowing" retailers to sell off some stock because they think some people who would buy the Marathon (or other similar ones) might go for the new Frontier instead.

Have you thought about a Fisher-Price Safe Voyage Convertible Car Seat it is made by Britax and is modeled after the Marathon but about $100 less can also be found at Albee's or Target. I have one and love it.
