Anyone seen the movie, is it suitable/understandable/interesting for a 5 yr old, what about a 3.75 year old? I'm not familiar with the book so I don't know what its about.
Wondering whether to go tomorrow for DDs birthday
Thanks so much

I took my 4 YO to see and she loved it. However, we've have the book and have read it about a million times. The first time I read it, I thought it seemed a little scary but not so much after a few times. You might want to read the book to her first. Just a thought.

This is really a great movie. I loved it.
My dd is almost 3 1/2. She enjoyed it until the end. She burst into tears. It was a tad scarey. However, I did not notice other children overly scared.
PP had a great suggestion in reading the book first.

Our DD (15) took our DS (4) to see it, and they both loved it. He hadn't read the book, but now he wants to.
I haven't seen it yet, but thinking about taking my 2.5 year old. Nell Minow (www.moviemom.com) is a really reliable movie critic in my experience. Mostly I don't/won't listen to critics. However, I've heard her on radio shows and I really like the way she sticks mostly to "technical" details (language, how skin the actors show, etc) without getting too much into "artsiness" of a movie. She's also really good at using descriptions that are more than just the standard "adult language" explain what your going to experience in the movie without giving anything away.
She gives Horton an A- and "Parents should know that there is some peril in this film, but even by G standards, it is very mild. Even the bad guys turn out to be friends at the end." This makes me think that it would be good for lots of little ones.

DH took DS last week when preschoool was closed for a teacher work day. DS loved it and so did his friend. Both are 4 y.o. :)

I haven't seen Horton, but I really like this site: http://www.kids-in-mind.com/
It gives 3 numerical ratings for each movie -- one for sex/nudity, one for violence, and one for profanity (Horton's rating is 0.3.1). Then it lists the specific details of the movie that earned it each rating. I check it for all the movies my 8 year-old wants to see. I can be prepared for any issues that might arise (he's always been especially emotional about parent/child separation -- so orphan themes are approached with caution).
Sort of OT: Sometimes the problem with kid movies is not so much the content but the presentation. We took him to see a Winnie the Pooh movie (can't remember which one) and it had a lot of flashback scenes; the plot (such that it was) was hard for my then-very-linear-child to follow. He liked the movie experience, but found the actual movie very frustrating.

I took my 2.5 yr old, and while I (and he) would say he liked it I think it was too abstract for him. I don't think he could quite put together that the whos lived on the spec. It was a lot to ask that he get that they seemed "normal" size to them, but to Horton they were small. I think a 4 yr old would be fine.
My child is very, very sensitive to scary movies. The only part where he got upset is where one of the whos got a shot (novicane?) and they put it in his arm instead. It was supposed to be funny how his arm didn't work, but my child found it upsetting.
There is another scene about a mean vulture, but my child wasn't troubled by that.

I took my 3.75 year old and he understood it and enjoyed it (as did I). He had not read the book before.

I took my 5 yr old and 2.75 yr old yesterday to see it. It was the first movie that either of them have seen in the theater. Overall, my sensitive 5 yr old loved it but was a little scared by the novacaine scene. My younger one enjoyed the experience of going to the movies, but didn't follow the story much. She got a little bored and restless towards the end.

My 5 yr old loved it. She did not get some of the abstract concepts either, but loved it just the same. I would wonder if it would be too long for some of the younger kids. I usually love kid movies but, honestly, for some reason it felt a little long for me!
