DS re-admitted to hospital

My 5 yo DS was re-admitted to the hospital last night. He was in the ER on Sunday and Monday night for what appeared to be a stomach flu. By Wednesday he was still sick. Labs were done and we were sent for an abdomen ultrasound and then CT scan. He was admitted Wednesday night for possible appendicitis. Friday morning the doc said he was just constipated and sent us home.

Friday night as we are getting the kids ready for bed, my DH notices that my son has some spots on his elbows. We also see them on his wrists, knees, and ankles. We head back to the ER where they do more labs, and another CT. The doc has no idea what is going on and calls another doc, who again is clueless. They call a specialist and present his symptoms. SHe is suppossed to be the best doc we could have in this region.

She becomes very concerned and has him admitted. We finally get a room at about 6:30am and get setteled in. He is in a great deal of pain and they have him on morphine. The specialist comes in and is really baffled too. More tests will be run today to see what is going on. He has petechial hemmorraging and swelling in/on/around his joints.

I ran back home to shower and change and will be headed back. My DH is up there now and our DD is with some close friends (they have 7 kids and say "What's one more? We don't even know she's here!")

Hope all is well. Are you in a military hospital? Are you able to get to an academic center if need be? I love my local community hospital, but if my kids came down with something out of the ordinary, I'd want them in an academic children's hospital.

We are still at the hospital and they (think) they have figured out what the problem is. He is on Morphine and some steroids. He still has blood in his stool, but at least his urine is yellow again (and not kool-aid red - that was scary). We will be there at least through Tuesday afternoon.

We now have another specialist that is checking in on him, so our care team is growing larger! Most of the nurses have been great, but of course, there are a few that we have not been overly fond of.

One of the docs said that he will be on steroids for at least a month and we will have to do urine tests on a regular bases for at least a year.

That's about it for now. DH is up there so I could run home and change/shower/etc. My DS only wants his mom, so it has been hard to break away.
