We live in a cape & have skylights on the second floor. I'd like something that will help block the heat out but not be too ugly.

We have Levelor (sp?) pleated shades that work great. They were in the house when we bought it so not really sure of the cost. They are a foresrt green which doesn't really match my decor/taste but the dark color works great. I'd love it if they were a dark brown/bronze.

FWIW, our friends used a plain cheapie room darkening window shade. Mounted on one side a fastened tightly at the other. It works fine and is not noticeable for what it is unless you are looking for it.

We use the heat reducing window film. It has gotten more difficult to find the kind that will go on a skylight though. The kind at Lowes doesn't work.
We use the smokey gray color that doesn't ruin the view from the skylights but does decrease the heat that comes through.
