DS is now 6 weeks old and I thought I'd type out my thoughts on wearing him to hopefully help others who are trying to decide what they want for the newborn stage. Here is what I have:
Peanut Shell microfleece pouch (left over from DD)
Funky Giraffe twill (has a bit of stretch to it) pouch
Moby wrap
MeiTai (made by a friend)
I used the Peanut Shell first as it was still chilly when DS was born and the fleece was so nice and snuggly for him. I think I first used the Moby when DS was a few days old, and alternated between that and the PS til it warmed up outside. Then I put the PS away and started using the Funky Giraffe pouch, along with the Moby, and when he was 2 or 3 weeks old I added the MeiTai into the mix. I like each one for different purposes.
By far, the one I reach for the most is the FG pouch. It is so easy to put on and take off, DS loves it, and if I need to nurse him it's so simple to take the pouch off and do that. It is very comfortable to wear, even though DS is now 12lbs. My only complaint with pouches is that they tend to slip off my shoulder sometimes - not sure if that is the nature of them or if I'm doing something wrong. I infinitely preferred a two shoulder carry for DD.
The Moby is great if I know I'll be wearing him awhile. It's a bit of a pain to put on, esp if I'm not at home (hate that the wrap always drags on the ground while I'm putting it on), and I've been tying it in the back and the knot is not comfy when I'm in the car, so I tend to not put it on til I get to my destination (hence, putting it on in parking lots). I love it for grocery shopping so I have both arms and hands free. My other Moby complaint is that if I need to nurse DS, I have to pull the wrap off of one shoulder - he is simply to big to nurse in the Moby, so I end up partially un-wrapping so I can pull my shirt up and nurse. Not so fun when I have a hungry baby waiting! It is comfy though, esp in the beginning I couldn't feel DS's weight at all in the Moby. He likes the Moby well enough - probably not quite as much as the pouch. I wish I was faster at putting the wrap on, but that probably just is because I haven't done it often enough to get fast yet. I do think we'll be using the Moby for awhile yet.
The MeiTai has been nice, though I often tie it too loosely around my waist and have to re-tie because DS's feet start falling out the bottom! If I remember to tie it a certain way, I don't have that problem. DS likes it ok if he's very sleepy. Otherwise, he wants to be able to see out, and he's still too little to see out. When he is a few months older, this will probably be the carrier I use exclusively. A MT was DD's exclusive carrier once she hit 6 months, and we still use it for her now. They are my favorites!
The Peanut Shell is too big for me now, I think. DS is pretty low when he's in it, and I think I'd need the shoulder flip at this point to use it since he is heavier. It was great though for the first few weeks of snuggly newborn-ness. I like the structure/shape of the FG pouch better.
Hope that helps!
