I would like to get DS the new wooden chunky toddler size Thomas and was thinking someone here has got to have it or has seen it already. What's the verdict? It says 1+

How old is your DS?

My DS was able to play with the trains on a simple layout by 15-18 months. DD is 18 mo and we just got our train table back down out of the attic. She can push them around quite a bit. Not perfect, but enough that she's interested.

I personally probably wouldn't invest in something unless it could be used with the regular Brio/Thomas scale track down the road. JMO. I think all of the different scales of trains are kind of annoying, personally.

If you want something bigger, another company (made in the USA too!) is www.maplelandmark.com. They have several scales of train. One is compatible with Brio/Thomas but they do have a larger scale one (MIL got it for DS when he was about 1). It is really well made. There is track available for that size too on their site IIRC. We never had any of the track but the train itself was nice.

eta (for specific links)
this is the scale that is compatible with regular Thomas/Brio, less expensive, no commercial characters and made in the USA (in case you are interested for the future)

This is the one DS got when he was about 1: (larger scale than Thomas/Brio)

Their largest scale (i'd remove the peg people for safety if you are worried about choking).

He is 10 months today. I'm looking for a first birthday gift. I would like to get him some type of vehicle and I just figured this would be a great chunky size for him to hold. We have a Fisher Price set of stacking/nesting vehicles that he and his twin sister fight over.

MIL has a bunch of brio track and trains but they are really too small. He can actually fit some of the trains in his mouth. We had to take away his paci at a young age because he could fit that in there and actually close his mouth! Its just my kids...they are weird! ;)

All kids are weird LOL. DS was totally over putting things in his mouth by 12 months or so, but DD is 18 months and still torments me by putting stuff in her mouth and then refusing to spit it out. Fun times ;)

I think the train you picked out would be a fun gift if you don't have to shell out money for a Brio/Thomas set down the road (with MIL's collection).

My kids are REALLY crazy. DD's favorite thing to do right now is crawl to our many low window sills, or pantry shelfs, pull herself up and grip her teeth on there and pull back as hard as she can. She took a chunk off the window sill just yesterday! They are both totally loony with "eating" things. We cant even keep board books around and our toilet paper is kept up high or else they will eat it-yuck!

Well thats what Birthday/Xmas money with coupons, craigslist, upscale resale stores are for lol! :)
