A mom in our playgroup is having her 40th birthday and I need to think of a good present. I'm thinking of spending $20 to $40, and no ideas are popping to mind. She is German and has lived in the US for a lot of time, she's really good at many things. Her husband is also German and runs the US division of a fairly large corporation. They have one son.

All I can think of are the basic, generic type gifts and I was hoping to come up with something creative. The party has a wine theme, but do I bring a bottle of wine? I'm sure you can't get too many wine presents, but still, it seems so boring. We have two other playgroup members that I could talk to about doing a group gift with if there's a larger type item that sounds like a good fit.

Thank you for any ideas!

OK, here are some things I"m thinking of...

-- she likes to cook, maybe a Williams-Sonoma g.c.?
-- she also likes crafting, I could do a Michaels g.c., or a g.c. to a fabric store in Chicago that she likes (her sister lives in Chicago)
-- flowers?
-- wine?

They love to ski and go on real ski trips, Canada, CO, Europe.... but I know zilch about skiing, and ... it's summer.
