Ok, I thought I was so lucky finding these at Savers (thrift store) and paying just a fraction of the online price. Now I can't find the books and it appears the Leappad Learning system is no longer being sold?

I see the leapfrog website has a few books, all discounted, that work with either the Learning or read/write one. I'm confused about the "cartridges" - do some come with cartridges and others not? If I need to buy used on ebay, how do I know if one needs the cartridge?

This is the read/write I got.

Here's one that needs a cartridge

At least the lite brights I got at the same time work with just construction paper (apparently the pages are the mega-expensive part of that toy).

The LeapPad is being replaced by the new Tag Reading System.

All the LeapPad books come with cartidges. Any of the regular LeapPad books/cartridges will work with the system you bought. That means the ones maked "LeapPad", "LeapPad Read/Write", and "LeapPad Quantum", will work. But NOT the ones for "Little Touch LeapPad" or "My First LeapPad", which are different systems.
