I searched and found books for Christmas, Winter, Spring, Summer... but not a thread for Halloween and Fall... so what are your family's favorites?

There's a book of Halloween poems called It's Halloween by Jack Pretulsky that is nice.

I also like - The Little Old Lady who was not afraid of anything.

I would be interested in other titles too!

This is for the younger ones, but DS loves the "Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book" by Joan Holub.

I haven't taken the rest of my Fall/Halloween books out yet, so I'll add more later!

For a child of what age?

DS likes "The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything" but that could be a wee bit scary for the younger set. He was 3 last Halloween and enjoyed it.

One of our favorite books, especially for September/Autumn in general is Apple Farmer Annie. Great book, and it happens to feature a *woman* farmer (w/ no mention of a husband, etc.), and I think that's kind of cool (our CSA is run by a single woman and two helpers. Both of her helpers are usually female as well...she takes interns each year interested in learning about organic farming). I get sick of the books about the male farmer and the only mention of his wife is that she's cooking dinner in the house ;)

For the younger set, Gerda Muller's books on the seasons (just pictures, no words, and very, very beautifully illustrated) are fantastic. Great for encouraging a child to tell you the story to inspire creativity.

We like Elsa Beskow, and the book Hazel, Woody, and Little Pip is adorable for fall.

We have a Biscuit anthology from MIL and there is a cute Halloween story in there.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some of our other Fall/Halloween favorites (still packed away in the attic for another few weeks) but those are the ones that spring to mind.

eta: The Oxcart Man is a nice classic (Donald Hall). Not specifically Fall per se, but deals w/ the harvest, cycle of seasons. Feels very Fall to me, IMO.

I like "The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything" too. I'll have to think if there are any others.

i am pretty excited about ordering, "happy halloween, stinky face" from our scolastic thingy because dylan has a serious "stinky" callin' habit and we are working on "playful parenting" him away from using it in an ugly way. (so far, working great! he know calls me "pretty mommy" when he is mad. lol!)

I just wanted to say that it is awesome that playful parenting is working for you on this one. I have to remind myself to use it sometimes, but I'm always amazed at how well those techniques work. Anyway, just wanted to give you a :bighand: :cheerleader1: :boogie: because it always makes me smile to see it helping someone. (that has been one of my all time favorite parenting books, for sure!).

We have only one Halloween book and it's probably old since it's a handmedown. It's from the Mercer Mayer Little Critter series. The Magic Pumpkin. Dora has been loving it for the last couple of months and keeps asking when we are going to get her a magic pumpkin LOL!

Lois Ehlert's Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf and her Leaf Man are both nice.

My girls like What a Scare, Jesse Bear.

Scary. Scary Halloween (Eve Bunting/Jan Brett)

If you go to Amazon and type in any of the books mentioned, they have a feature that shows you similar books (people who bought this also bought...) There are a bunch that look nice. Have fun!

We have that. It's a lot of fun - from the 70's, very nostalgic.

DS also really likes the "Biscuit" books, so he has "Happy Halloween, Biscuit" and "Happy Thanksgiving, Biscuit".

My daughter loves "Boris and Bella". Enough that we read it year around. I haven't read the whole story yet but I think I'll be getting "Boogie Knights" for her this year. She also like "The witch who wanted to become a princess" (also read year around).

Fall Is Not Easy - Marty Kelley - simple and fun. A tree is trying to figure out what to do with its leaves in the fall.

And a couple by Dav Pilkey - The Hallo-Weiner and The Night Before Thanksgiving. We read these both all year.

My kids love the book On Halloween Night by Wolff, Kozielski, and Avendano. I see that it's not in print anymore though.

There's also a really cute book whose name escapes me about two little mice each taking care of the same pumpkin and it grows to be gigantic.
