I will probably convert my 2.5 year old over to a big bed before we have another kid, but I am trying to avoid buying a toddler bed until I do that.

I have a Pali denise crib with a side drop. If I am not worried about her rolling of the bed, why couldn't I just remove the side rail and not buy the 100 buck straight (toddler conversion) rail?

We have a Pali Forever Rosalia, which is a stationary side. When DS turned 2, we just converted it to a full size bed and put up safety rails. We did have to buy the conversion rails to make it full size, but we decided that the cost for a short-lived toddler bed wouldn't make sense for us. DS loved his big boy bed and had no problem going from a crib to the full size. We were told by the store that most people don't use a toddler bed and just go to regular bed when DC outgrows the crib. HTH
