.....and not the flat 2D-al easy one I was envisioning but one with a spherical head and hat and all the rest.
So how can I bake a sphere? I haven't seen good pics of any cakes like this (maybe b'cos they're so hard to make :hysterical:)
I think she would settle for clown cupcakes - like these

but again - no clue where to start!
Please help - I really want to make it for DD and make it a special day for her!
eta - I have made cakes before - so i have some basic skills with icing etc.
Thanks,

Here's a good idea. THe person said she bought them at Krogers.

Cupcake with swirl of frosting and then a clown cake topper (wilton's have them), and then a few sprinkles

Here's an idea from Wilton's and a link to the clown cake topper

Thanks - DD doesn't like the clown heads from Wilton but it would have made life easier. She wants only the head and she's going to help with the eyes and the nose etc.
Thanks again.

Wilton makes a "sport ball" pan that makes a spherical cake. We just used it for Sarah's birthday to make a Poke-ball cake. ;)

I bought a cupcake book called "Hello, Cupcake." It was written by the woman, Karen Tack, who does the Family Fun cakes. They have a really cute clown/ circus themed cupcake thing in there. If you can get to a bookstore it is worth a look. It looks like she sadnwiched together 2 vanilla wafers and decorated the cookies to be the head then set those on top of the cupcakes (which were decorated to look like clown bodies with those "circus peanuts" soft candies for the feet. They llok pretty easy to make and cute too.

We all used to love the cakes my Mom made us when we were younger! She had a 3D teddy bear pan from Wilton that she used to make quite a few different cakes. Maybe you could make a clown from this pan?

Also, I found this on the wilton site:

Good luck!

Hi all,
Thanks for the suggestions. The sports ball/clown ones from Wilton look like they may be hard to pull off. I read reviews which made it sound like the ball was hard to bake and level and ice etc etc. Beth, how hard was it?
I'm thinking cupcakes may be the way to go here (maybe bake a simple 2D cake for the adults/extra servings) b'cos Mommy can do without the added stress of making one big cake look good and is more willing to take her chances with 24 cupcakes of which she hopes one or two will turn out well and can be photographed! Or hey, let DD decorate them and then everyone will have to oohh and aahhh over her handiwork! :bighand:
So I need something round for the head on a cupcake. Everyone seems to have used a scoop of icecream -won't work for us b'cos the party is not at home.
Is there a round candy or something that I can roll into a ball? Some kind of dough or fudge or something? Not that I know how to make fudge :ROTFLMAO: and DD is nut allergic so can't buy fudge easily. I feel like there is something I have eaten which is spherical - like a marshmallow ball or something? Anyone??
Thanks,

maybe donut holes for the heads? They seem to be a perfect size for a cupcake and have a few flavors to choose from. HTH!

We've done a lot of Wilton cakes and it was extremely easy. Probably the easiest one we've ever done.

Make sure to freeze the cake before trying to ice it. That makes it 1,000 times easier.

Here are two examples of how people made a head cake - they used the wilton ball tin.

http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/cake-decoration-ideas.html

You could then look for ideas on how to decorate like a clown by looking at clown cakes
http://www.coolest-birthday-cakes.com/circus-clown.html#c9

For the hat, you could use a birthday hat, or make your own out of paper, with a pom pom or streamers on top. For the hair, you could get the white shredded coconut and use food color to make it yellow or orange. Or you could try food color in uncooked rice noodles then break into smaller pieces. Or you could get red licorice strap and cut into thin pieces an arrange as for hair. For a bow tie, you could make out of paper or a thick red ribbon. You would need to try to find candy that you could use for eyes, nose, mouth etc. or use frosting to make these. You could buy a real clown nose and put that on.

I would give it a practice try a couple of weeks before the party. You could make a smaller version, or not worry so much about getting it perfect, but you could experiment with different candy/frosting techniques.

There's also websites where you can buy cake decorating items already made.

I think it's totally doable. It'll just take a little time to work out how to decorate it.

For the mouth, you could use the red fruit roll ups, unroll and cut to shape. You could fine clown colouring pages on the Internet to print out and be a template for how to do the eyes, mouth, nose etc.

You can also buy rolled fondant - either color or white and then you add food colour and knead until the colour is consistent. You roll it out to the thickness you want and then you cut out the shape. This might be the easiest way to do the mouth, eyes, nose.

You might also want to find a local cake decorating store. There is one near me and the owner/staff often have ideas to solve problems.
