So...which photo finish do you prefer? Matte or glossy?

Just wondering what most people here prefer and why. I normally print all photos with a glossy finish, but overheard someone at the photo developing place raving about matte finish.

Is there a benefit (in your opinion) to one over the other?

I really don't like glossy finish. I think matte finish looks more professional and just nicer in general. Plus, it doesn't show fingerprints as much as glossy!

I've driven to another place to get matte...it looks so much better in frames as there's no glare and no fingerprints.

I love matte. There are a few places where I prefer glossy, for example, at my walgreens, the matte just prints all the photos too dark compared to the glossy, so if I'm in a hurry and have to print there i print glossy. OTherwise, I go to my favorite place and get matte.

I like glossy, but always get matte b/c I hate dealing with fingerprints and glare. If I know I'm going to mat & frame the picture right away, I get glossy.

IME, @ my Costco & Sam's Club, the glossies always come out darker than the matte for some reason.

I like them both but for different purposes -- matte for holiday cards, glossy for framed prints. However I'm not picky.

I prefer matte. I took photography in high school and we were taught to use matte. Plus, I don't like the glare from glossy.

I prefer matte if I am going to hang it. There are some cases where glossy looks better, but in general, I prefer a matte finish.

Wow! Thanks for all of your replies. It obviously appears as though matte is the clear favorite. I am curious though, for some of you who use both, what do you use glossy for specifically?

I also have the same concerns about color saturation being different for both.

Wow - I'm here to lend PPs some glossy support. Maybe it's where I've been getting my pics developed but the matte pics look so off. The glossy look more like the old normal photos that I got from my non-digital camera so I always get glossy. Matte just looks strange to me unless it's a professional pic.

I agree with AbbysMom. Maybe its where I get my pics printed (Costco), but generally the glossy ones look sharper and truer to me than the matte ones.

For professional pics, surely matte!

So this leads to another question- where do people get their pics printed? maybe I need to try one of those places that print good matte pics.

I get mine developed at Ritz Photo. But of course, I have always developed them in the glossy finish.

I like matte with a border. I print my pictures either thru CVS or Shutterfly
